India & UK Emerge as the Only Countries to Witness a Decline in Ransomware Attacks in SonicWall's Recent Report
SonicWall, a Silicon Valley based network security products & solutions company, recently released the findings of its latest ‘SonicWall Cyber Threat Report – 2019’. As per the study, there was a significant & continued increase in the ransomware attacks across all countries, with India and UK being the only exceptions. Despite India witnessing a 49 percent reduction in malware attacks, India has a very daunting task ahead to efficiently combat malware attacks, as attacks had seen a massive 53 percent increase last year.

The SonicWall Cyber Threat Report – 2019 provides in-depth analysis of the global cybersecurity landscape by deriving data from its over one million sensors from across the world. During the study, SonicWall analyzed 3.9 trillion events across 215+ countries, where the company’s threat researchers studied over 200,000 malicious events and malware samples daily to compare & document online criminal activity.
The survey also revealed that 3.9 trillion intrusion attempts were made globally, of which 10.52 billion malware attacks were blocked in 2018, and IoT attacks saw a massive 217.5 percent increase in 2018, raising a major concern among users regarding the connected devices and the security measures that those devise possess. Additionally the number of encrypted malware attacks saw a 27 percent YoY increase from 2017, amounting up to 2.8 million. Overall, ransomware attacks witnessed 11 percent increase YoY, while web app attacks increased by 56 percent.
SonicWall’s patent-pending Real-Time Deep Memory Inspection (RTDMI) identified 74,290 never-seen-before attacks in 2019. These attacks had no signature at the time of discovery and also comprised of multiple side-channel attacks, thus making them very unique and complex. Also, 19.2 percent of malware attacks used non-standard ports, and this technique saw a YoY increase of 8.7 percent.
